1994: the first display ad appeared on HotWired

1997: GoTo.com's launch and the beginning of pay-per-click

2000: Google launched AdWords

2003: Yahoo acquired GoTo.com (rebranded as Overture)

2008: display ad revenue at $19.7 billion

2013: search ad revenue at $49.1 billion

2013: display ad revenue at $33.9 billion

2017: display ad revenue expected to reach $50 billion

In 23 years since the launch of the first display ad for AT&T by HotWired, the industry of online targeted advertising has been tremendous growth and success. By 2017, display ad revenue is expected to reach $50 billion. Other forms of online targeted advertising (search and mobile) are expected to increase in revenue as well.
